Music
of Survival
The Story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus
A Documentary Film by Orest Sushko - UBC Member and Emmy Award Winner
The story of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus
is one of incredible courage and true grit -
a vivid chronicle that celebrates the human spirit.
Music of Survival is the triumphant tale of the
seventeen members of the Ukrainian Bandurist
Chorus who survived one of the most horrific
times in the history of the modern world - World
War II. In the face of death - they played on,
singing of their homeland and liberty. They defied
the odds, and their gift of music carried them
across the ocean to freedom.
This documentary film chronicling the history
of the Chorus weaves together a visually rich
narrative with compelling interviews from the
last survivors, rare archival footage - all coupled
with an emotionally taut soundtrack that brings
out the deepest roots of our traditions and the
very best in our Ukrainian national character.
More than any other film project, Music of Survival
has the potential to radically transform public
perceptions of Ukrainian history among North
American and European audiences. It draws a sympathetic
portrait of the post- World War II emigre community
and celebrates the resilience of a culture that
has survived centuries of repression. Just as
the Ken Burns documentary series on the American
Civil War and the History of Jazz gave North
American audiences a deeper understanding of
their own culture, Music of Survival could have
a profound impact on international opinion as
well as our own national self-image.
The film is nearing completion. Your tax-deductible
contribution, coupled with your acknowledgement
in the film's credits will illustrate the growing
enthusiasm to help bring this story to the screen,
and stand as a testament to the collective vision
of enriching a worldwide audience through the
noblest of our cultural legacies.

SUPPORT FOR THE UKRAINIAN BANDURIST CHORUS
Contribute to a legacy.
Today, we have two important questions for you.
1. How many people in the world play the piano? Millions.
2. How many people in the world play the bandura? Maybe
hundreds.
As the national instrument of Ukraine, the bandura is more than a musical instrument; it is the voice and soul of Ukraine. Since its founding in 1918, the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus has preserved the bandura and the traditions of the legendary kobzari by cultivating generations of modern kobzari where 92 years later, the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus is still producing ongoing concerts and tours, facilitating an education program, actively recruiting talent, and leaving a legacy of work on recordings. These components, along with your continued support, have allowed us to continue our mission for 92 years.
You can now donate online to the "Friends
of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus" (a
501c3 organization). As always, your donations
are tax deductible and will help the Ukrainian
Bandurist Chorus support its operations, tours
and concerts, new recordings, and educational
programs for youth.
The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus is continuing
its ambassadorial mission as it approaches its
100th anniversary in 2018. We truly appreciate
your past support. Today's members of the UBC
are located all throughout North America. Bringing
everyone together is a challenge, but your financial
assistance ensures we continue our centuries
old tradition.
